A layer of mulch reduces water evaporation from the soil. It minimizes weed competition, reduces soil erosion, and can improve soil aeration. The soil is insulated when using mulch, keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Trees that are provided mulch around their bases are less likely to fall victim to lawn mower damage and will develop a more extensive root system, resulting in better stabilization.
